Seek Your Bliss, You Got to Seek Your Bliss

30 Nov

Every year for Thanksgiving, Skye writes a bit of a rap/poem/speech/humerous diatribe of sorts to share with the crew surrounding the table.  The rap is always accompanied by participation by all those around…whether that be to sing the chorus or stomp their feet or clap their hands to keep a rhythm.  It’s always funny yet meanigful, and this year was no different.  What follows is Skye’s rap, as Shanye and I rap the chorus continuously under his words. ….and don’t forget to read it with a rhythm….

Chorus:  Go get it, got it, get it good.  Seek your bliss, you got to seek your bliss…

“So I’m coming at you hot with a message; a lesson.  It’s going to shout out of my mouth like a smith and wesson.

It’s chosing passion as fashion, with no distractions.

Strip it all away and your down to your health.  It’s not about flat screens, what your drive and material wealth.

You got to seek your bliss, seek your bliss.  Go get it, got it, get it good. Seek your bliss, you got to seek your bliss.

Love for your friends, your family and yourself.  Don’t take it for granted and store it on a shelf.

Life is short ans sweet like your mother.  So make a mark and elevate another.

What do you love to do and what is important to you.  don’t take it for granted and store it on a shelf. So get out, get up and take care of yourself.

You got to seek your bliss, seek your bliss.  go get it, got it, get it good!”

This video goes well with these words….  It’s the season somewhere to seek your bliss….

New Mocean365 video, Meg and Skye play in the park.

12 Nov

Today we headed out into the park nearby, brought some goodies like our Gibbon Slackline and our home made Turkish Bags and found some really fun terrain to get a Mocean session in. We always look for movement sessions that challenge us in many ways. Today we did some climbing, throwing, crawling, jumping, balancing, running, throwing and more all outdoors and while having way too much fun.

This style of movement really helps prepare us for the rigors of our lives whether we are winter surfing, working in the trades, building trails or like Meg the other day-night, working a 16 hour shift as an RN. We need to be prepared for anything and “being tired” just doesn’t cut it.

A bunch of people stopped and asked us what we are doing as they often do. We usually just reply, “having fun moving around outside” or something like that. But we always try and encourage people that they too CAN DO IT and don’t need a gym or a trainer or fancy equipment.

We got a few shots today and put together a video for you to check out. Hope you enjoy and always remember, YOU CAN DO IT!

Mocean365 to attend MovNat Certification Workshop

13 Aug

As a  trainer in today’s world you are expected to stay current and certified. For me over the years that has been through some pretty traditional fitness certification organizations. Most of them(98%) are inside and very traditional gym oriented and require no physical competency. This never made sense to me? How can you lead others in movement if you just study some materials and are not even judged on your own movement, teaching prowess and being able to think on your feet? So I have gone away from those options and focused on staying current with things like my Wilderness First Aid/CPR,  and Avalanche Training Level 1 and becoming an Exuberant Animal Trainer. There are really only a couple options if you are training outdoors, teaching full body and mind movement and lifestyle.

Another  option is called MovNat and  is very similar to my own teaching and should be a great compliment to my offerings at Mocean365. MovNat is a fitness system based entirely on using the full range of our natural human movement abilities such as walking, running, balancing, jumping, crawling, climbing, swimming, lifting, carrying, throwing, catching, and self-defense.  MovNat is for everyone, it is progressive and safe, and supports physical competence and conditioning for any area of life. The creator of MovNat, Erwan Le Corre and I talked a few years ago when he was just beginning about working together and it will be good to finally see that happen.

“To revolutionize physical education and fitness on a global scale by teaching a real-world physical competency and conditioning system, based on natural human movement skills, to support a lifetime of physical activity.”

Mocean365 will more than likely someday do its own certification process of trainers to teach the Mocean methods but until then will look for outlets that share the same beliefs as my own. So in November I will be going to a MovNat certification workshop and in the meantime I will be practicing my required physical competency movements. I look forward to implementing new material and knowledge into the pot of influences to continue to keep Mocean365 well rounded and fresh and have something for all abilities.

Here is a video to get the idea and see why I’ve chosen these guys.

Barefoot Movement Adventure Guidelines

9 Jul

“What spirit is so empty and blind, that it cannot grasp the fact that a human foot is more noble than the shoe and human skin more beautiful than the garment with which it is clothed.” Michelangelo

So we touched on some of the benefits of barefootin’, in the previous post. The feedback we received from that post was great both in the world of social media(grrr..) and in person(yes!). Many people had personal stories that nailed home the concept of going  barefoot not just as “barefoot running” but just going barefoot during other times. Many of the stories sounded like testimonials to some higher power with people improving balance and eliminating pain through the simple act of taking off their shoes.

But where do you begin if you want to start a journey in barefoot exploration? What are the dangers? Benefits and even legalities of doing so? Well, here are some ideas.

1.Start small- For some it just starts with a simple act of taking the shoes off around the house in an area that is very known and relatively controlled. This is a great place to start for folks that aren’t willing to bite off more than they can chew. Your lawn or yard or heck your back deck or hardwood floors can serve as an initiation to the estimated 70,000 nerve endings in each foot. People need to break in their feet incrementally and build up their feet to be able to handle greater terrain challenges.

2. Be regular- Instead of going for a long hike right off the bat, go for shorter regular break in periods giving the feet plenty of time to recover. Feel your feet not only becoming stronger but also possibly the foot and ankle complex which will result in improvements in balance and proprioception, coordination and even joint function among other benefits. But as with everything in our bodies, regular is good but think about varying the intensity of sessions. I can really feel my feet “talking” after a long hike or a full day in the woods barefoot so the next day will time to back off and let them recover and heal so they can come back even stronger and more resilient.

3.Pay attention!-one of the great things about taking off your shoes is that you will start to PAY ATTENTION! You aren’t bumbling along blindly dragging your feet, you really need to look ahead and plan out your steps. This can be an extremely rewarding experience and can turn a simple walk or hike into a real movement adventure. As you go from the break in period to being ready for greater adventures, the need for awareness increases contrary to what you may think. Yes your feet are built up but just like with knives, chainsaw’s and many things in life, it is often when we get too confident and take things for granted, things can fall apart real quick. The dull knife being more dangerous than a sharp one scenario. Just this week, I’ve had some close calls with glass in areas that I assumed were safe and where my attention had lapsed a bit…stay focused!

4. “Know before you go“- Knowing the terrain you will be walking, trekking, etc. in can be a good practice for sure. Beaches for example can be an area that seem like a “no brainer”,  but actually can be fairly risky with both man-made hazards such as glass, metal and even needles etc. in addition to sharp shells, rocks and wood. So sometimes it can be good practice to have some footwear on at first until you know an area and once you feel ready and willing to take em’ off, do so.

Dangers?

Yes this world is not as pristine as it once was and as opposed to our ancient forefathers having to dodge large scary animals looking to eat them, we conversely have to mostly watch out for our fellow bipeds.

  • Glass, Rusty metal, sharp plastics, wood splinters all pose potential risks and are far greater than those found in nature like rocks, roots and thorns etc. in my opinion.
  • Another potential risk these days is the increased talk of people getting MRSA from going barefoot. This is a fairly controversial subject and there are naysayers on both sides of the coin. Seems that bare footing in the hospital would not be a great idea(though I’ve done it plenty when there..)
  • Being typecast as a “hippie” or homeless might be more of a risk-Going barefoot can be very intimidating to people who are used to wearing shoes. I get the funniest looks at times at the Post Office, gas station, banks and various businesses along with sidewalks in a busy town/city. A couple of years ago I even entered a fitness/strongman competition barefoot. One of the challenges involved flipping massive tractor tires over and over down an old parking lot then carrying heavy sand bags to and fro. I could hear some smack talk from the sidelines but I just used it as fuel and beat everyone there expect one mid twenties professional mixed martial artist who took the overall title. I believe it actually gave me an advantage and after the event, many folks wanted to hear my feedback. I felt lighter, more agile and grounded, end of discussion! Once you get over the looks and smack talk, the ground is yours for the taking!

Legalities

  • IT IS NOT ILLEGAL TO DRIVE BAREFOOT!!- This seems to be a myth to the point of some police officers even assuming that is a law but it is not! Which isn’t surprising since there are 2 states that allow breastfeeding while driving.
  • It is actually rarely illegal to be barefoot anywhere. It is generally up to the owner of a store/facility/business etc. to set a clothing requirement and most often is NOT for unsanitary reasons. Much of the thought process of the act of not having shoes on being unsanitary is ridiculous at best. It is more myth than fact. In fact it is more unsanitary to put a foot in a dark, moist and contained area(shoes). When people’s feet stink, it’s generally from shoes, not being in the open air. Ever get a good whiff of a pair of Vibram Five Fingers or New Balance Minimus? Great shoes but damn those things smell to high heaven.

Get to it!

So it really comes to you and what you want from the experience. Improved musculature in the feet and legs vs. atrophy and weakness. Awakening the numerous nerve endings at the entry point of our connection to the earth. Strengthening the  very foundation of our great temples. A tactile connection that has been ingrained in us for most of our existence on earth. Whatever it may be, make it yours and maybe bring even more attention and engagement to your game by kicking off the shoes and getting grounded!

MindFull Attempts vs. Mindless reps.

29 May

At last nights Mocean365 Outdoor Movement Session I was leading, it dawned on me. The thought of the importance of working towards improving how we move is so much more important than “just moving”. I mean this wasn’t really a new thought of course as I integrate skill work into almost every movement session I lead. But it was just instilled as I had each of the person try to perform a fairly complicated move that taxed the body and the mind. And they waited their turn and watched others try the moves out and adapt their body to the complexity. Their was also a little performance anxiety at work as well which eventually seemed to elevate everyone’s performance as they saw others progress.

It is often the norm in the world of fitness to  just do movements that are instantly attainable. “here, lift this like this 20 times for 3 sets, blah, blah, blah. But in the world of movement, we are honing skills and trying to build better body awareness and preparing our bodies for whatever may come our way. That is sometimes a high-speed crash on a mountain bike at 20+ miles per hour with multiple terrain hazards like rocks and trees abound  or a wipeout at a surf break that has rock or coral just below the surface. Standing zombie like doing mindless reps does NOT prepare you for much of anything but doing just that movement.

Our bodies are designed to be extremely dynamic, fluid and flowing and are capable of extraordinary feats of skill, strength, dexterity etc. We have seen videos of people flying through the air whether on their own feet or on a bike or board and is baffling the potential of our “temples”. And we have seen people more impressively perform far outside of their bodies potential despite a limitation or challenge whether it’s of age, injury, impediment or having lost some of their bodies function.Look at this video of a man skateboarding with no legs etc as an example.

So why do so many people train for such dynamic feats without replicating movements that are challenging in nature. Well of course the good ones do train that way. But so many people who are on a new path are often led down a road of controlled environments in only one direction(planar wise). Some people have joked to me while I have them work on skill work, “you are just trying to make me look silly”. I usually reply with, “If it were easy, we’d call it the gym”.

Now many of you must think I despise gyms as a whole but that’s not the case. There are some out there that focus on multiplanar movement and producing the true potential from people’s bodies. We have recently been going to an indoor space, called the Green Mountain Freestyle Center on their “adults night”. After completing some body awareness training, you are free to use giant trampolines, foampits and various gymnastic apparatus in a safe environment. It’s an amazing and humbling experience. Last week many of us really just worked on MindFull attempts. Over and over, trying to hone a skill like jumping over a high object or back or front flipping into a foampit. I think the place is great.  Also many indoor places like The Confluence in Berlin, VT offer an indoor environment that is multiplanar and extremely varied and scalable for many different ability levels. You can work on jumping, rolling, climbing alongside others in a positive environment. This is a very good thing.

But whatever we do with our bodies and training, it is in my opinion, always important to work on elements of skill development. Your CNS(central nervous system) and muscles are so interconnected and creating greater cohesion within our bodies systems is very key to our athletic development, whatever our age, level or goals may be. In fact, it’s when we work on this that the true potentiality of our bodies are unlocked and allowed to soar!

So step outside of your comfort zone and if you haven’t yet, implement some skill work into your movement sessions. Hell, you could try to juggle, wheelie your bike, do a handstand or do your usual workout on one leg or with your eyes closed. Depends on where you are at and what you want out of your training and your body.

May the force be with you and as always, keep the comments, questions and feedback coming right at us!

Peace
